Conflicting News Sources Relative to Housing Trends

Just a few weeks ago, the Wall Street Journal - a publication known for its accurate and impartial news reporting - ran an article stating that home sales were up in Long Island and New Jersey. Recently, the Wall Street Journal ran another article saying that home sales had reversed in New Jersey - exactly the opposite they’d reported a few weeks earlier. What does this mean for you as a buyer?

As with any other type of media or reporting, you have to take news about the real estate market with a grain of salt. Media sources often report on things based on limited information or with a private agenda that means their reporting isn’t always impartial. When you’re searching for any kind of news, you should always consult a few sources to determine whether the piece is widely reported and fairly accurate. Unfortunately, even that doesn’t guarantee that what you’ve learned is correct, because some media sources simply repeat what other people are reporting without bothering to verify facts.

To be an informed consumer of any type of news source, you should always look for correlating data for factual pieces. If people are reporting that the home market is improved, look for statistics on where they’ve found their numbers and what the basis is that they’re using for determining that the market has improved. If a news source doesn’t provide data for its reporting and you can’t verify the information through a third party, it might not be accurate.

Practically speaking, this is a good indicator that the real estate market is still volatile and unpredictable. If even the Wall Street Journal is producing conflicting reports, it’s demonstrably difficult for even the most reputable news sources to predict and report on the real estate market. For buyers, this means that things are generally improving and now is a great time to buy, but the market may still experience some unexpected bumps and backslides on the road to recovery.

It’s mid-June, and the temperature is already starting to get hot in some places. The summer is one of the most popular times to move - particularly for families with kids - but the next few months are also moving into the hottest part of the year, which can make moving a nightmare. Heatstroke is a real threat when moving during the summer, so make sure you follow these tips to move safely in the heat!

Check the Weather Forecast Closely

If your moving date is flexible, check the weather forecast closely. Look for a day when the temperature isn’t going to be too high; preferably a day with low humidity. An overcast day is ideal, as moving with the sun beating down on you can be an excruciating ordeal. If possible, plan around the weather forecast to find a nice, cool, overcast day to move.

Stay Hydrated

When you’re moving during the summer, it’s vital to drink lots of water and stay hydrated. Drink more water than you think you’ll need. Even if you’re not thirsty, take a break every 20 to 30 minutes and drink some water. It’s far too easy for the body to lose vital moisture when you’re doing heavy activity in the summer, which can lead to overheating and dehydration.

Move in the Morning or the Evening

The morning and evening are typically the coolest parts of the day, so try to plan your moving around these times. Morning is best, as the temperature tends to be lower and you don’t have to contend with hoards of mosquitoes and fading daylight. Moving in the evening is a good second choice; after 4PM or 5PM, the temperature starts to drop and moving becomes more tolerable. Avoid moving between noon and 4PM, as that’s the hottest part of the day.

Carry Less than You Think You can Carry

Resist the temptation to carry heavy loads just to get the moving over faster; carry less than you think you can carry. Carrying lighter loads isn’t as much strain on your body, even if you’re carrying more of them. You’ll sweat less and your core temperature will stay lower, which is good news for moving in the heat.

Many hands make light work, so hire movers or recruit friends and family to help. The more people who are helping you move, the faster you’ll get it done and the less any single person will have to carry. This is a great help to reduce the strain of moving on a hot day.

Many homeowners are moving forward with the attitude that the real estate market is recovered and property values are climbing - which is true in some places, but not on the national scale.
